British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said in an interview with British media a few days ago that it is “foolish” not to have contact with China, and that Britain should maintain a good economic relationship with China. Reeves said that she went to China earlier this year to participate in the Sino-British economic and financial dialogue to enhance the ability of British financial services companies to operate in China. “These arrangements are clearly in the UK's national interest, and I will use this attitude to engage in trade negotiations or financial dialogue with any country in the world.” she said. Reeves is scheduled to go to the US next week to attend a series of meetings including the G20 finance ministers meeting, and will meet with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to discuss the Anglo-US trade agreement. When asked how he viewed contacts with China, Reeves responded: “China is the second-largest economy in the world, and I think it would be foolish not to engage with it. This is the attitude of the current administration.”
