Dell (DELL.US) is busy “reducing the burden” under the impact of tariffs, and US computer discounts have shrunk drastically

The Zhitong Finance App learned that Dell Technology Group (DELL.US) has cancelled or reduced discounts on many of its computer products in the US, which further indicates that in the face of fluctuating tariff policies, consumers may have to pay higher prices.

An analysis of the archived version of the Dell website stored in the Internet Archive's “Time Machine” revealed that the number of laptop discounts currently listed in the Dell Online Store is at least the lowest since the beginning of 2024. Some special deals on desktop computers have also been removed.

For example, an XPS 16 laptop had a $600 discount at the end of March 2025, and there was also a big discount in December 2024. But by Wednesday, the discount had been lifted, and the total price of the laptop had risen to around $3050.

The tariff policy announced by US President Donald Trump caused significant fluctuations in the global market, raising concerns about a recession. For electronics manufacturers, the threat of such interference is particularly serious, as components and production workers come from all over the world. Trump decided to suspend additional tariffs on most countries, which caused a sharp rebound in the market on Wednesday, but tariffs on China still climbed to 125%.

Dell, headquartered in Round Rock, Texas, did not immediately comment on the matter.

Dell Chief Financial Officer Yvonne McGill told investors in March this year that the company sees tariffs as a cost investment. “So when I consider the increase in cost investment, I eventually have to pass this part of the cost on to the consumer,” she said.

Consumer electronics products such as laptops and smartphones are often sold below the list price in limited-time promotions. In some cases, discounts have been reduced but not completely eliminated. An affordable laptop in the Dell Lingyue series sold for $250 after a $130 discount at the end of March. By Wednesday, the price of the computer changed to $300.

In at least one case, Dell raised the product's list price. At the end of last month, an Alien-branded gaming laptop sold for around $1,700 before the discount. By Tuesday, the list price for the same computer changed to $1,880.

Like most electronics companies, Dell relies on a number of suppliers to supply parts or perform assembly work. Dell has always viewed its global supply chain as an asset, saying its supply chain is sufficiently diversified to help the company cope with the impact of tariffs.
