Bitcoin Well Inc. (CVE:BTCW) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 28%

Simply Wall St · 10/28/2024 11:03

Bitcoin Well Inc. (CVE:BTCW) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last month tops off a massive increase of 156% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Bitcoin Well may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.5x and even P/S higher than 8x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Bitcoin Well Has Been Performing

The revenue growth achieved at Bitcoin Well over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Bitcoin Well's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 10% gain to the company's revenues. Still, lamentably revenue has fallen 38% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 20% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that Bitcoin Well's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Bitcoin Well's P/S

Shares in Bitcoin Well have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It's no surprise that Bitcoin Well maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
