The Zhitong Finance App learned that on March 4, American flying car startup Alef Aeronautics said that pre-orders for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft had recently set a new record, and the number of orders had reached 2,850. And Space X, owned by Elon Musk, is a major investor behind Alef Aeronautics.
According to information, the two-seater flying car Model A developed by Alef officially obtained a legal flight license in the US in July last year. The flying car sold for as much as $300,000, which means Alef's total order value to date will exceed $850 million.
According to data, a flying car is a means of transportation that combines the functions of a car and an aircraft, and can drive on land and fly in the air. Since flying cars can develop their unique advantages in many fields and have huge potential for development, more and more countries are paying more attention to them. Flying cars have become the focus of competitive research among countries, and may trigger a great scientific and technological transformation.
Today's most representative flying car is the eVTOL. This emerging racetrack has attracted the participation of a number of start-ups, traditional car companies, and aircraft manufacturers. By the end of 2022, there were more than 300 eVTOL aircraft R&D companies around the world, and technology companies focusing on the eVTOL field, such as Joby, Archer, Wisk, Lilium, Eair, Fengfei, and Time Technology; traditional aviation giants such as Boeing, Airbus, Bell, and the Brazilian aviation industry have also joined or paid attention to this field; many car companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Hyundai, Xiaopeng, and Geely, and Internet giants such as Tencent are also developing layouts at the eVOTL circuit.
Recently, the domestic flying car industry has continued to be favorable. In October 2023, the Civil Aviation Administration of China issued a model certificate for the Ehang Smart EH216-S manned unmanned eVTOL. In December 2023, the EH216-S obtained a standard airworthiness certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Administration, becoming the first eVTOL aircraft in the world to obtain an airworthiness certificate. In December 2023, the Central Economic Work Conference emphasized building a number of strategic emerging industries such as biomantry, commercial aerospace, and low-altitude economy.
At the same time, positive industry developments such as the introduction of the “Interim Regulations on the Administration of Unmanned Aircraft Flight”, the successful test flight of Eaviation Intelligence, and the world's first flight of Fengfei's “Shengshilong” cross-bay route have also injected confidence into the market.
Many major companies are also very optimistic about the future market space for flying cars. According to the forecasts of consulting agencies such as Morgan, Deloitte, and Roland Berg, the global flying car market will reach 300 billion US dollars in 2030, surpass 1 trillion US dollars in 2040, and 98,000 flying cars will fly through the sky of major cities around the world in 2050.
Guotai Junan Securities pointed out that flying cars are an important exploration of the next generation of travel methods. In recent years, global automobile companies and technology companies have entered the market one after another to jointly promote iteration and progress at the technical level. The domestic policy side has continued to increase its support for flying vehicles since 2021. Starting in 2023, a clear schedule has been proposed for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft and flying vehicles. It is planned to achieve pilot operation by 2025, and new energy aviation vehicles will become mainstream in development in 2035. With the iterative development of technology and increasing support at the regulatory level, the future development of flying vehicles is expected to accelerate, while application scenarios for implementation will continue to be enriched.
