Trading in an IRA

Why trade in an IRA?

There are several reasons to open an IRA beyond saving for retirement. Here are a few additional benefits:

Tax Benefits

Depending on the type of IRA you select, you can take advantage of different tax benefits. With a Traditional IRA, you might receive a tax deduction upfront, while a Roth IRA allows for tax-free withdrawals during retirement.

Tax-Deferred Growth

Your account can grow through interest, dividends, and capital gains, all of which can accumulate annually without triggering a taxable event at year-end.

Investment Flexibility

Unlike many 401(k) plans and other employer-sponsored retirement accounts, which typically offer a limited selection of investment options, an IRA provides access to a much broader range of investments, giving you greater control over your retirement portfolio.

What can I trade?

Currently, We support the trading of exchange listed U.S. stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), ADRs, and select OTC securities. You can either manage your IRA yourself or choose a Webull Managed IRA. To learn more about our managed accounts, please click here.

Can I use margin in an IRA?

At this time, Webull does not support limited margin IRAs. All IRAs at Webull are cash accounts.

Can I short in an IRA?

No, you are unable to sell short in an IRA account. Initiating a short sale requires margin, which is currently unavailable in an IRA account.

Can I trade options?

You may receive up to options level 2, subject to approval. To learn more about strategies available in an IRA at Webull, please visit Available options strategies. Please note that any options strategy requiring a margin account, such as spreads, cannot be traded within an IRA.
